When people talk about poker, the topic is usually directed towards the many multi-player poker tournaments out there where players pitch their skills against one another. However, there are also plenty of poker games that are played whereby the player will play against the house – much like blackjack is played versus a dealer/casino.

Just as an FYI for all you newbies out there – the house is basically the dealer or croupier that is managing the casino table game you are playing at. If you are not playing versus a live dealer, then the house is the automated dealer or croupier, which you will come across when you are playing online casino games.

Poker played versus the house is becoming more popular in recent times. More online casinos are starting to include an increasing number of poker games whereby the player will pay an anti in order to play a hand versus the dealer.

Below we uncover 3 of the most popular casino games played versus the house.

3-Card Poker

The rules of 3-Card Poker are different from any other traditional poker game. Nearly every style of poker out there uses a 5-card hand to determine the outcome of the play. However, as the name would imply, 3-card poker only uses 3 cards. This changes the dynamics of the game of poker slightly because the math behind each hand changes quite dramatically.

Nonetheless, the naming convention stays relatively the same. Here are the 5 hands that you can make a winning 3-card poker hand with.

  • Straight Flush – 3 cards of the same suite with denominations running concurrently
  • Three of a kind – 3 cards of the same denomination
  • Straight – 3 cards with the denominations running concurrently
  • Flush – 3 cards of the same suite
  • Pairs – 2 cards with the same denomination

If neither the dealer nor player has any of the above hands, then the winner will be decided by who has the highest value card in their final 3 card hand.

You will also find that 3-Card Poker is popular not just in online casinos, but a firm fixture in a large number of land-based casinos.

Caribbean Poker

This is another poker game that is popular in both online and land-based casinos. Unlike 3-Card Poker, Caribbean Poker sticks to the poker rule back when it comes to deciding the value of a player or dealer’s hand. That means Caribbean Poker uses 5 cards, so we can get back to traditional poker in this game.

Up to 7 players can play against the dealer and both the player and the dealer are dealt 5 cards in order to get to the showdown. One of the reasons Caribbean Poker is so popular is because in most casinos it comes with a progressive jackpot side bet.

Another reason Caribbean Poker is so popular is simply that it is such an easy game to play.

  • Players need to firstly put in an anti after looking at their 5 cards
  • The dealer will already have been dealt 5 cards with one of those cards showing
  • If the player decides that he/she wants to continue, then the anti will need to be doubled
  • The dealer and player turn over their cards
  • Winnings hands are decided on the best 5-card poker hand

The game really is as simple as that, and it is a lot of fun. It is loosely based on the formerly very popular style of poker known as 5-Card Stud Poker, and this is why you will also hear some people call this game Caribbean Stud Poker.

Casino Hold’em

Casino Hold’em has become a popular game in the online casinos. It is not seen so much in land-based casinos unless the casino is a bigger casino that is able to designate some floor space to the game. It is a lot of fun, very easy to play, and follows the rules of Texas Hold’em quite closely.

This is an easy game to play but can also be quite costly unless you have a good bet sizing strategy. The rules are simple enough because all you need to do as the player is have a better 5 card poker hand than the dealer. To make your 5-card poker hand, you will use the 2 cards dealt to you plus 3 of the community cards or 1 of the cards dealt to you and 4 of the community cards.

There are 5 community cards dealt much like the game of Texas Hold’em. Therefore, you will have 7 cards in order to make your best 5-card hand.

  • The player places an anti
  • The dealer deals 2 cards to the player and 2 cards to the dealer
  • The first 3 community cards are also revealed (in poker this is known as the flop)
  • The player can double the anti or fold at this point
  • If the player continues, then the next 2 community cards are shown
  • If the player beats the dealer’s hand, then the player is paid out

As you can see, this is very similar to the procedure used when playing Texas Hold’em. The betting is slightly different as there are not so many rounds of betting as there are in Texas Hold’em. This is because the turn and the river come out at the same time. Also, once the turn and the river come out., which are the last 2 community cards, the showdown is immediate, so there is no additional betting at this point.
